Children
.
Children will learn from a series of books by Waterman and Harewood called Me and My Piano. This series is full of wonderful cartoons and activities to make learning fun! I have a lovely selection of stickers and treats as incentives to practice.
Intermediates
For my young pupils between ABRSM grades, we can look at the "Piano time", "Michael Aaron" or "John W. Schaum" piano courses. They offer great supplementary material and provide light relief for those between grades. I would also look into playing contemporary music for fun i.e. from film and television.
Music Theory
Music Theory is an essential part of my lessons since this provides an excellent foundation and basis for a good knowledge of music. These books range from first level to advanced (grades 1-8) and takes the pupil through every musical concept needed to aid with practical playing. These books are filled with question and answer sections, they provide the opportunity to learn musical notation and helps in the understanding of how music is put together. This book is essential for beginners from 12+ to adult years since young children will have theory activities within the Me and My Piano Series shown above. Music theory tasks can be set for work at home or can be done at each lesson with myself, depending on the pupil. These theory books are available online or in music shops, the series is from ABRSM Publishing and entitled: Music Theory in Practice by Eric Taylor. The level or grade needed by each pupil will be discussed once interest in lessons has been indicated.
